Burglars 'Using Social Media To Find Targets
Sky News – Mon, Sep 26, 2011
The majority of burglars are using social media websites to help target victims and plan their crimes, a survey suggests. Three quarters of convicted burglars questioned said sites including Google Street View now play a big part in their planning. A similar amount said Twitter and Facebook - where users 'check in' to locations - are also being used by criminals. Security expert Jonathan Lim told Sky News: "Burglars are analysing what's going on. "They can see people's status updates, with people on Twitter saying 'I'm away on holiday having a great time'. If they know where you live it's like an open invitation." Former burglar Richard Taylor said: "We're living in the age of the digital criminal and people are taking advantage of social media to access information about would-be victims. "We'll tell them even when we're going away on holidays. We will let them know that we're not in. We're inviting them... round to our house." Convicted burglars were asked the most likely things to lead them to target a property for a UK Home Security Report. As well as outlining their use of new technology, a fifth of burglars said they monitored homeowners' daily routine before striking. The survey of 50 convicted burglars also found the average home burglary only takes 10 minutes to commit. A home with no visible security could be broken into in just two minutes, they revealed. Average burglaries net criminals nearly 500.00 with most aiming for jewellery, cash and electrical goods although others targeted documents like passports. Only a quarter of those polled said guard dogs were a deterrent and less than one in 10 were put off by nosy neighbours. But more than half - 60% - said they would be discouraged from targeting a home if they knew it had a security alarm. http://news.sky.com/home/uk-news/article/16077087
Burglaries Increase in Kent According to The Kent Criminal Justice Board the latest figures from the Home Office for October 2009 to September 2010 show that crime continues to fall in Kent with 4,389 fewer crimes in Kent and Medway.
Commenting in January 2011 on the news that there has been a 10.4% reduction in criminal damage and 11.5% reduction in offences against vehicles, Acting Kent Deputy Chief Constable Alan Pughsley said: “Criminal damage can seriously affect people’s quality of life so it’s very encouraging to see a significant reduction of more than 2,500 crimes. Our neighbourhood policing teams work extremely hard to ensure local communities are listened to and issues such as criminal damage are tackled quickly and effectively.”
However, small increases have been seen in other areas of the most recent crime statistics.
Burglary figures show a small increase of 2.3 per cent (286 more crimes), while robbery has increased by 6 per cent (53 crimes). Theft offences have gone up by 3.8 per cent (1,023 crimes). Drugs offences have gone up by 8.5 per cent, meaning 338 more crimes of this kind have been recorded, http://lcjb.cjsonline.gov.uk/kent/372.html#streets

Fuel Oil Tank Security
Police warn of heating oil thefts The isolated nature of some rural homes makes them an easy target for thieves Rural householders have been warned by police to be vigilant after a rise of heating oil thefts from gardens. The price of the fuel has risen by 70% in recent months and criminals are said to be using increasingly sophisticated tactics to target isolated homes. Police have advised homeowners to fit padlocks on their tanks and consider installing alarms. EAGLE SECURITY have installed security systems for home owners to protect their valuable resource and given piece of mind that the fuel will still be there when required. More than 1.5m homes across the UK, mostly in rural areas, are dependent on heating oil. The increase in the price of the oil and the isolated nature of many of the homes has made them an easy target for thieves.
David Hamilton, a pensioner who had £500 worth of oil stolen from a tank outside his home, said it "doesn't take much" for an isolated person to get cold without fuel and heating before going "over the edge" towards hypothermia.
Ian Johnson, of the National Farmers' Union (NFU), said thieves "will do anything" to steal fuel.
He said anecdotal evidence suggests they are using increasingly sophisticated tactics, "including watching the depots, following the lorries, seeing where [fuel] is delivered and helping themselves to the contents".Eagle have installed security systems for home owners to protect their valuable resource and given piece of mind that the fuel will still be there when required. Police have reported an increase in the number of cases of thieves stealing heating oil., police arrested one man responsible for stealing oil from many rural homes in order to sell it again. “It is very sad that when most people are pulling together to help each other a small minority are committing these offences.” Chief inspector Jerry Reakes-Williams.
With around 1.5 million households using heating oil and the average cost of a tank of oil around £900 for a 1000 litres. Of particular risk to oil thefts are isolated properties in rural areas or farms. The NFU (National Farmers Union) Mutual insurance company has received more than one hundred claims with a value of £50,000 in the last six-months.
People are becoming more aware thanks to BBC news, radio programmes and newspaper articles spreading the word of this crime. Make sure that your oil tank is not visible from the road, and if it is, then fences, trellis, trees or hedging can be used to make the oil tank less visible to passing traffic.Be aware that plastic tanks can be drilled which may lead to other problems. Not only do you have to buy a new oil tank but you may have an environmental problem cleaning up the spilt oil.
